Judiciary Operations in the Event of a Government Shutdown

Congress has not completed work on the fiscal year 2024 appropriations bills, including the bill that funds the Judiciary.  In order to avoid a shutdown, Congress has until midnight Saturday, September 30, 2023 to pass a continuing resolution to fund the federal government pending future enactment of 2024 appropriations bills.  If no spending measure is passed by the deadline, federal agencies will have to implement shutdown plans on October 1.

The federal judiciary retains some ability to remain open by using certain limited funds not dependent on Congressional appropriations.  Therefore, even if Congress fails to reach a short-term funding deal by September 30, the United States Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York will remain open and operational until further notice.
